AEC-TEA’s youth theater group attracted large audiences for its December performances, as family and friends of the actors as well as members of the community at large came to see the spectacles.
The advanced group performed a play written by AEC-TEA’s theater instructor, Francisco, called Quem Conta um Conto de Cordel, a comedic story of two fueding families from the Brazilian sertão told in poetic rhyme and complete with Northeastern Brazilian music and dress. The beginner’s group performed O Auto da Compadecida, a popular and entertaining Brazilian story of two friends that get mixed up with thieves, landowners and the Church in the sertão.
Both plays put a respect for local culture and traditions front and center, while also offering for free an entertaining type of theater production not commonly available in the area. Best of all, local youth seized the opportunity to overcome shyness and develop a dedication to a new art.
