In my first week in Capim Grosso I've been introduced to a number of people who are important in the lives of the AEC-TEA volunteers. Uniquely, some of these important introductions have been to the men and women who sell us fruits, vegetables and snacks such as acarajé, beijú or bolo. One of the first people I met was our milk lady, Ana. For the past week I was on breakfast duty so my day began at 7 am with a trip to the bakery for fresh rolls, followed by a stop in front of Ana's house to fill up our jug with milk still warm from the morning's milking. A couple of times I needed to wait while the farmer's delivery boy (who comes in on a motorbike) topped up the vat. At this early hour the streets are busy with locals doing the same. Monday is market day in Capim Grosso and the streets bustle with people who come from nearby towns to buy and sell fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, clothing and other items. At the market I met Eva who runs a stall selling pineapples, melons, tomatoes, lemons, mangos and green vegetables. After we had selected all that we needed at the market - including papaya, mango, pineapple, manioc, sweet potato and beans - we hired a man to take it all back to the house for us in his wheelbarrow.
