AEC-TEA is a relatively new association, run entirely by local volunteers with the participation of visiting Brazilian and international volunteers. As you will see by our history, we have tried many new things in a short amount of time and our activities depend largely on the interests of our community and current volunteers. 1993 – Creation of the Tarcília Evangelista de Andrade Civic Center by a group of high school students in order to raise money for trips and events.
1997 – Creation of the Tarcília Evangelista de Andrade Educational Cultural Association (AEC-TEA) with the objective of participating in a state project to receive an educational TV transmitter. When the project was cancelled, the group split up.
2002 – Reorganization of AEC-TEA with the objective of providing training for local English teachers while encouraging local participation in volunteer work. – Creation of AEC-TEA website and posting of the first ad on www.idealist.org
2003 – First international volunteers arrive and stay with local families – English courses start in room offered by AEC-TEA's president's family – First Sign Language course offered in Capim Grosso by an AEC-TEA volunteer – Cultural exchange event – "Cool School" Project (ACEC School) – students work with teachers and volunteers to design and paint murals in each classroom of their school with educational themes. – AEC-TEA Library established – AEC-TEA volunteers start to give community talks on issues of citizenship, globalization, domestic violence, volunteer work – "Values Project" (Peixe) – a team of local and international volunteers carry out a week-long art project in an elementary school which utilizes puppets and storytelling to raise issues of family and community. – First Volunteer Action Seminar of Capim Grosso – unites leaders of local schools and programs that would like to host volunteers, provides orientation on working with volunteers and proposes the inclusion of voluntary service in the city´s school curriculum.
2003 Volunteer Placements: ACEC School, Jose Mendes School, Edivaldo School, Creche Alegria Infantil, Pastoral da Criança 2004 – Renovation of new space – the association which runs the creche allows AEC-TEA to use the abandoned building in exchange for daycare assistance. The building is renovated entirely by volunteers with minimal resources. – First Spanish course offered – Art in Schools (ACEC School) – international volunteers carry out art activities with 4th to 9th grade students – AEC-TEA receives the first volunteer psychologist, who provides support to counselors and teachers in child welfare agencies – First Yoga classes offered – Beginning of Art at AEC-TEA – free workshops for children with recycled materials – First Italian class offered – "Values Project" (Água Nova) – Participation in the ACEC School Environmental Fair 2004 Volunteer Placements: ACEC, Casa do Menor, Casa da Saúde, Creche Alegria Infantil, Creche de Planaltino, Conselho Tutelar, PETI
2005 – First German course offered – Launch of AEC-TEA Community Radio Program (English and Spanish audio courses) – Benefit Lunch – Beginning of Digital Inclusion Course (in partnership with federal welfare program) – Radio Socio-Educativo – Local youth take on Community Radio Program, devoting its focus to social issues and educational themes – Formation of AEC-TEA Youth Group, whose members start to take on teaching and leadership roles in the association – "Values Project" (Peixe) 2005 Volunteer Placements: ACEC, Conselho Tutelar, PETI, Creche Alegria Infantil, Creche de Planaltino
2006 – First writing workshop offered – Secretary of Education creates Capim Grosso's first Inclusive School, contracting former AEC-TEA volunteer to teach sign language to all staff, students and interested community members – AEC-TEA partners with the Secretary of Education to create English curriculum for city schools and provide free training for English teachers – Cultural Exchange Party – Publication of Thick Grass: Capim Grosso in English, English textbook based on life in Capim Grosso, including texts, photos and art by AEC-TEA students, now utilized in local schools – Teaching Assistant Program starts – English Level 4 students work as assistants in Level 1 and 2 classes, receiving a special certificate upon completion of the semester – First AEC-TEA Discussion Fórum (Topic: Higher Education in Capim Grosso) – Repair of drums for Afro-Brazilian Percussion Group – Local volunteers become AEC-TEA teachers – Graduates of the AEC-TEA English course teach English Levels 1 and 2, while a neighbor offers to direct Art at AEC-TEA – "Values Project" (Contorno de São José) – coordinated by AEC-TEA Youth Group – 2nd Benefit Lunch, organized by Youth Group 2006 Volunteer Placements: Creche Alegria Infantil, COOPES, Colégio Tarcília, PAIF 2007 – Local youth group assumes leadership of AEC-TEA!
